Through The Lens looks at some famous and not so famous Sunderland and football related images from years gone by. I’ll update this section regularly and give some background to the image shown.
The one above is taken from the game between Sunderland and Bristol Rovers at Roker Park on 7 September 1974. Sunderland won the game 5 v 1.
I watched the match from The Roker End. Sunderland tried to batter Rovers but for 20 minutes they held firm. Then the breakthrough. Tony Towers was felled in the box by Frankie Prince, as you can see a stonewall penalty, and Billy Hughes rifled the ball home.
It was plain sailing for Sunderland after that.
